I’ll never forget the first time I heard about the Museum of the Bible. I was driving to work and I had KLOVE blasting on my radio. A commercial came on about how there was going to be a new museum built in Washington D.C. that was dedicated to the Bible. I remember thinking to myself, “Wouldn’t it be nice to go see that – but I’ll probably never go to Washington D.C.” Fast forward three years later and I finally got to walk through those doors. I guess life’s funny like that sometimes – you never know what’s waiting for you.
In today’s post I’m going to share a few things you need to know before you visit the Museum of the Bible.
Where It’s Located
The Museum of the Bible is located at 400 4th St SW, Washington, DC 20024 and it’s definitely worth your time and money to visit. The museum is 6 stories high and houses fascinating exhibits, gorgeous artwork, theaters, and noteworthy artifacts such as Elvis Presley’s personal Bible.
Each floor offers different interactive exhibits and information about the Bible and the Bible’s impact in the United States and all around the world. There’s even a restaurant on the 6th floor called Manna and a cafe on the 1st floor called the Milk and Honey Cafe.
Parking is very limited in this area of D.C. so I suggest parking at SP+ Parking @ Patriots Plaza located at 395 E St. SW Washington, DC 20024. They’re open Monday – Friday from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM and they only cost $11 per hour. They’re a few blocks down from the museum but it’s about a five minute walk away so make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
Where to Start
While all of the exhibits and floors are worthwhile the one I’d suggest starting with is the 4th floor – there you can walk through a life-size replica of the streets of a Galilean village and learn about the culture Jesus lived in. There are countless places to take pictures in here so make sure you have your camera handy. You’ll be in here for a while.
The day we visited the museum a gospel youth choir was singing in the lobby so we got to listen to a free concert in between exhibits.
Why You Should Go
The Museum of the Bible is a wonderful experience for everyone in your family to enjoy. Not only will you learn a lot about the Bible but you’ll also see a lot of things you never thought you’d see. Things like a life-size replica of a Gutenburg printing press or a replica of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The beauty of the artwork and the history of the artifacts and exhibits leaves you with a sense of peace and serenity.
So if you’re ever in the D.C. area definitely take some time to check out the Museum of the Bible – you won’t be disappointed.
Quick Things to Know about the Museum
- Tickets can be purchased online or in person but I would highly suggest purchasing them online because it’s cheaper. You can see all the ticket prices here.
- Students and military get a small discount on tickets so make sure to bring your student or military ID.
- The museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm, but is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
