Lafayette, Louisiana is a city located in Southern Louisiana that’s known for its Cajun & Creole food, art, culture, and music. It’s actually considered by many as the “Heart of Louisiana’s Cajun and Creole Country.” Founded in the 18th century by Canadian Acadians who were expelled from Canada and settled in Louisiana, this city is a place many tourists visit for a rare but genuine taste of Louisiana life. And while Lafayette is an excellent place to visit, so are the surrounding areas.

Denis, my mom, and I recently took a day trip to this part of Louisiana and we found more than enough things to see and enjoy. In today’s post I’m going to share some of my travel tips so you can make the most of your trip if you’re ever in the Southern Louisiana area.
Grab some Lunch or Meat Market Goodies from Poche’s Meat Market
Poche’s Restaurant & Market is a Beaux Bridge must-stop. Located roughly 18 minutes outside of Lafayette, this meat market/restaurant is perfect if you’re looking for a great place to grab a bite or you’re just wanting some top-notch, specialty meats to take home. Founded in 1962, this family-owned business has been a staple in the Breaux Bridge community for its delicious food and downhome vibe. I highly recommend picking up some stuffed pork chops and chicken. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
Pick Some Wildflowers at St. Rose Flower Farm in St. Martinville
For some seasonal flower fun check out the St. Rose Flower Farm in St. Martinville. This U-pick flower farm is filled with absolutely gorgeous flowers and greenery that allows you to create your own beautiful flower arrangements. Located at 1271 Leed Champagne Road, St. Martinville, LA 70582, it’s easy to find and easy to park at. A fun fact about the farm is that it was named after St. Rose of Lima, a humble South American girl who raised cut flowers and cared for the sick to help support her large family. We really enjoyed coming here in the summer. The owner was very nice and supplied everything you needed to cut and pick your own flowers. The prices of the arrangements you can make vary and the times the farm is open is seasonal so make sure to check out the St. Rose website and their Instagram for times and prices before you go.
Browse All Seasons Nursery & Landscaping, Inc.
Because I love flowers and greenery so much I knew we had to stop by All Seasons Nursery and Landscaping in Lafayette. You can find this beautiful garden center at 2974 Johnston St, Lafayette, LA 70503. They have everything you could possibly need or want for your garden or greenhouse. From flowers to flower pots to outdoor furniture, this place has you covered. But even if you don’t buy anything just stop by and take a relaxing stroll through the flowers.
Browse the Stalls at the Lafayette Jockey Lot
The Lafayette Jockey Lot is a gigantic open air flea market located on I-49 just 1 mile north of I-10. Here you can find everything – from collectibles to antiques to clothing to leather goods and so much more. They also have a concession area that offers a variety of foods and drinks. If you do get the chance to stop by, I highly recommend wearing a good pair of walking shoes. You’ll be here a while. It’s open every Saturday from 8am – 5pm and Sunday from 9am – 5pm.
Pick Up a Delicious Poboy from Pop’s Poboys
There’s nothing more delicious or Louisiana than grabbing a delicious poboy, especially if it’s coming from Pop’s Poboys located at 740 Jefferson St, Lafayette, LA 70501. This poboy sandwich shop is locally owned and offers a variety of poboy options as well as yummy sides, appetizers, and desserts. Each sandwich can be ordered as a half-size or a whole-size. I went with a half-size grilled shrimp poboy with a side of hushpuppies and was more than full. Also, the prices are too bad, making it a great place to eat if you don’t want to spend a lot. But definitely get there early so you can find parking. There’s no parking lot so be sure to bring quarters for a parking meter.
Grab a Dessert at Borden’s Ice Cream Shoppe
My last recommendation is to stop by the Borden’s Ice Cream Shoppe. Located at 1103 Jefferson St, Lafayette, LA 70501, this shoppe will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Built in 1940, this ice cream parlor is a place full of rich history and delicious ice cream. They have a wide variety of flavors and ways to serve it, but get there early if you can, because the line can get pretty long.
These are just a few of the things you can see and do in the Lafayette/Breaux Bridge area. If you find yourself in the South Louisiana region definitely check these places out. And for more Louisiana travel recommendations click here.
