This book follows an 18 year old girl named Ada who is newly, happily married to a local boy she grew up with in her town. All is well until Ada discovers that she is unable to get pregnant. After a year of trying and an unfortunate miscarriage of a neighbor, Ada’s town turns on her and labels her a witch. Barren witches get hung from a tree, so in an attempt to save her life, Ada’s mom sends her to a convent to live out her days as a nun.

Fed up with her situation, Ada asks the Mother Superior for guidance and is surprisingly introduced to the Hole in the Wall Gang, a band of barren women who’ve also been exiled from their towns and families. Their fearless leader is called the Kid and with the gang’s help, Ada quickly learns that she’s stronger than she thought she was.

I think you should read this book because not only is the main character strong, she’s very relatable. She’s being punished for something that’s completely out of her control. If you’ve ever faced infertility that is definitely a feeling you recognize. Although Ada’s life is drastically changed, she takes each new season in stride and learns to adapt. She really is a survivor in every sense of the word.

While I would not recommend this book to kids, I think any adult who wants to read a well-written story about a band of misfits who made the most of out of the hands they were dealt should most certainly pick up this book. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
