Books Worth Reading: Divine Rivals & Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross

Have you been looking for a romantic, heartwarming duology to dive head first into this February? Are you a fan of season 2 Downton Abbey, star-crossed lovers, World War II, the he-falls-first trope, and romantical fantasy? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are definitely in the right place.

Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross is one of the most romantic books I’ve ever read. And when I say “romantic” I’m not just talking about the love story between the two main characters or even the magical setting of the book. I’m actually referring to Rebecca Ross’s writing style. She has this unique way of weaving together the most beautiful images with her words. There are several quotes from the book that I found myself thinking about even after I’d turned the last page, which is why I knew I had to dedicate a post to these books.

Divine Rivals follows two journalists as they vie for a columnist position at their city’s most prestigious newspaper, the Oath Gazette. One is named Iris Winnow and the other is Roman Kitt. Winnow and Kitt do not get along and yet fate keeps forcing them together. The book is set in the magical country of Cambria, where a war between the god Dacre and the goddess Enva rages in the countryside. Iris and Roman spend their days writing articles about the war and their nights (unknowingly) writing letters to each other through two magical typewriters. As the two rivals get to know each other better they’re paths bring them to the frontlines of the war and it’s there that they realize their love for each other.

The second book, Ruthless Vows, follows Iris and Roman’s story as the war progressively worsens. When the god Dacre sets his sights on the city of Oath, Roman does everything in his power to protect Iris and stop the war. With the help of her best friend, Attie, and an elusive goddess, Iris sets out on a quest to save not only the world but the love of her life, Roman.

I saw the first book all over BookTok and Instagram so I was definitely curious about it, but I didn’t read it until the second one was released earlier this year so I could pick them both up at the same time. And, honestly, I’m glad I waited because as soon as I finished the first one I dove into the second one. If you’ve been looking for a series that gives you a little bit of everything, you should definitely pick up this series. The characters are warm and relatable, the setting is (literally) magical, and the plot never lags. This is a gorgeous love story worth reading and definitely worth adding to your TBR.
