Books Worth Reading: It Ends With Us & It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover

There are certain books that stay with us long after we’ve turned the last page. Books that not only entertain us but make us think. The two books I’m going to feature today are these kinds of books: It Ends With Us and It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover. In honor of the upcoming movie release of It Ends With Us, I wanted to shine a spotlight on the books that inspired the film and why I think you should read them if you already haven’t.

The first book, It Ends With Us, follows Lily Bloom as she opens a flower shop for the first time in Boston. Lily has never had an easy life. She grew up in an environment with an abusive father so she’s slow to trust most people. That is, until she meets an incredibly handsome neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid. Ryle is unlike anyone she’s ever met but he has a strange aversion to commitment that Lily believes she can change. In the meantime, her life gets even more turned upside down when Atlas – her first love – steps back into her world and reminds her of a simpler time.

As for the second book, It Starts With Us, it picks up right where the first book leaves off but you get both Lily and Atlas’s points of view. Book two focuses more on how the choices of Atlas and Lily ultimately push them closer together and how you can still find happiness even after a period of darkness.

Let me start by saying that I’ve known about these books for a while and it took me a long time to pick them up. I couldn’t believe the story of Lily, Atlas, and Ryle was worth the hype, but now that I’ve read both books, I can honestly say they are. Colleen Hoover’s writing paints a beautiful picture of love, trust, pain, and strength. Both Lily and Atlas prove to be characters who are strong enough to press forward, even when the circumstances justify that they stand still. I really enjoyed the way Colleen incorporated Lily’s past journal entries throughout the books – it really helped me catch a better glimpse of the love and friendship Lily and Atlas share.

Yes, these books have some heavy parts, but they will also make you chuckle, make you mad, make you sad, and (ultimately) make you hope. So, if you haven’t already, pick these books up and give them a try. I recommend buying both of them together because, trust me, you’re going to devour them.
