Fall Books You Should Read this Autumn

Ah, fall. The time of year when you can finally put on that oversized sweater you love so much and pull out those boots from the back of your closet. The time of cool, crisp mornings and early evenings and pumpkin spice everything. The time the leaves change from vibrant green to stunning shades of orange, red, maroon, and gold. And everything is just so cozy, which makes it the perfect season to snuggle up with a really good book.

Killing November & Hunting November by Adriana Mather

If dark academia is more of your style this duology is just what you’ve been looking for. November is a girl who goes to a-not-your-average school called Academy Absconditi. What makes this school so unique is that it’s a school for assassins, spies, and master impersonators. In a school like this it’s easy to make enemies and November has her fair share of them. But when a student is murdered, November makes it her mission to solve the case before she’s the killer’s next victim. The second book in the series follows November and Ash (a fellow student and hottie) as they try to find her missing father.

Both books are a mix of a little dark academia, a little murder mystery, and a whole lot of entertainment.

The Queen’s Gambit by Walter Tevis

Ok, so I fell in love with this next book after I watched the series on Netflix and let me tell you – the book did not disappoint. Just in case you haven’t seen the series, this book is about Beth Harmon, an eight year old girl who suddenly becomes orphaned and grows up in an orphanage in Mount Sterling, Kentucky in the 1960s. While there she learns to play chess from a janitor and soon discovers that she’s a chess prodigy. At 13 she wins her first chess tournament and by 16 she’s competing in the US Open Championship. By 18 she’s the US Champion and travels overseas to take on the Russians. But will she let her own demons stop her from reaching the top?

You might think this book is boring because it has chess in it, but trust me, it will keep you on the edge of her seat. Also, definitely check out the series on Netflix if you have a chance.

Fall Into You by Caroline Frank

It’s finally time for some cozy autumn romantic comedies and this first recommendation is everything you long for in a cozy fall read. It follows an Italian woman named Liza who falls for her brother’s best friend, Matt, a total player her family doesn’t approve of. But Matt is the first person to put a smile on Liza’s face since the death of her father. So what if he has a past, everyone does. Can Liza and Matt make things work without her family finding out? Or will Liza let her brother, Vinny, come between them?

This is an open-door romance so this book does contain some spice so I would not recommend this for younger readers. But if a sweet little love story set in fall is what you’re looking for, definitely check this one out.

The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston

I fell in love with this book earlier this year and knew that it had to be included on this list. This book is about a woman named Florence Day who can see ghosts and can even speak to them. She lives in New York with her best friend, Rose, and is secretly a ghostwriter for one of the most famous romance writers on the market. Florence is great at churning out romance novels – that is until she gets her heart broken. Now she can’t finish her latest book and her super hot editor, Ben, is waiting. When she returns to her small hometown for her dad’s funeral, she’s struggling to get through but things get worse when she sees the ghost of Ben at her family’s funeral home.

If you like cozy small towns with quirky yet relatable characters this is the book you need to be reading this fall.

The Cider Shop Rules by Julie Anne Lindsey

Out of all of the books on this list this one is probably the cutest (which is saying something because it’s a cozy murder mystery). It follows a woman named Winnie who discovers the body of Mr. Potter in the back of her pick-up truck at the annual Fall Festival. Now it’s up to Winnie to find out who killed Mr. Potter before the killer strikes again. But will Winnie learn more than she bargained for? If you’ve been having trouble channeling the autumnal feels this is definitely the book you should pick up. I mean, it has everything you need for fall – a fall festival, a pumpkin patch, a corn maze. You’re all set.

Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney

This last book is perfect to dive into on a cold and stormy night. It follows Daisy Darker, who hasn’t seen or spoken to her family in years. When Daisy and her estranged family gather for her grandmother’s 80th birthday they don’t have high expectations for the evening, but everything changes when Daisy’s grandmother announces that she’s leaving her entire estate to Daisy. Trapped together for several hours, the Darker family gets another shock – someone murders the grandmother at the stroke of midnight. Now everyone’s a suspect and it’s up to Daisy to find out who the killer is before she becomes their next victim.

If you’re a fan of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None or the movie Knives Out this book will be right up your alley.

Gilmore Girls: At Home in Stars Hollow by Micol Ostow, Illustrated by Cecilia Messina

Ok, so it wouldn’t be fall reading if I didn’t include this book. This book is for all the Gilmore Girls fans out there. Yes, it’s a children’s book. Should that stop you from reading it? No way. It’s too cute to pass up. Basically, it’s a picture book about Lorelai and Rory Gilmore and their lives in the cozy little town of Stars Hollow. What I love most about this book are the illustrations – it’s so fun to my favorite characters in cartoon form. Definitely one you’ll want to read and flip through on a cozy, Autumn evening.

So now that you’ve seen my fall TBR recommendations, what are some of your favorite books to read in the fall? Let me know in the comments. And be sure to check out last year’s fall reading list recommendations.
