Time to Rock N’ Roll: The Best Books about Bands

Have you ever wanted to start a band? Maybe you were actually in a band in high school or college. Maybe you’re in a band now. I don’t know about you but I’ve always found rock n’ roll bands to be fascinating. The dynamics between the musicians makes for some really good stories. While I’ve never been in a band myself, I really enjoy watching movies and TV shows about them and especially reading books about them, which is why I wanted to do this post. In today’s post I’m going to share some of my favorite books about bands that you can add to your current TBR. If that’s something you’re interested in, just keep scrolling . . .

Guitar Girl by Sarra Manning

The first book on this list is one of my absolute favorites. It follows 17 year old Molly Montomgery and her two best friends, Tara and Jane, as they form a garage band called The Hormones for fun. But when the guy of Molly’s dreams and his best friend join the band everything changes. Suddenly, The Hormones are front-page news when their debut album skyrockets up the music charts. Everything seems great . . . until it’s not. Will first love, teen angst, sleazy managers, and newfound fame go their heads? You’ll just have to read it to find out. I really, really enjoyed this book because Molly was so relatable. Yes, she’s a rockstar but she’s also still a teenage girl with relatable insecurities.

Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I fell in love with this fictional band when I saw the TV show on Amazon Prime, so I knew I had to read the book. And boy, am I glad I did. This book is unlike any other book I’ve ever read. Written in interview style you get each character’s unique point of view as they recall the rise and fall of Daisy Jones & The Six in the late 60s and early 70s. Daisy Jones is your average singer trying to make it in Hollywood. The Six is a garage band from Pittsburgh who’ve come to Hollywood in hopes of getting a record deal. But everything changes when their worlds collide.

Diary of a Teenage Girl (the Chloe series) by Melody Carlson

My next recommendation is actually a Christian fiction book series about a girl named Chloe who – after a personal encounter with God – forms a Christian rock band with her best friends called Redemption. When Chloe and her friends get a record deal and begin touring with a guy band, their lives are changed forever. The series consists of four books total and each one follows Redemption as they rise to stardom and discover that maybe fame isn’t the most important thing their music has to offer.

Struts & Frets by Jon Skovron

This next book is about a guy named Sammy who wants to be a musician just like his grandfather, so he starts a band with a few of his friends. But things take a turn for the worst when Sammy’s grandfather’s health begins to decline, his band begins to self-destruct, he starts to develop feelings for his best friend, and his mom’s too busy to help. Can music be Sammy’s saving grace? This book is full of heart and real and relatable situations with likable characters. I really enjoyed reading about the relationship Sammy has with his grandfather and their shared love of music.

Beauty and the Bully by Andy Behrens

Out of all of the books on this list this one is the funniest one by far. This book actually made me laugh out loud – it was that good. It follows a guy named Duncan who wants nothing more than to get this girl Carly’s attention. When Duncan goes to school with a bruise on his face he finally gets what he wants. Carly is concerned about how he got hurt and so Duncan says the first thing that comes to mind – that a bully beat him up. Carly stays by his side as he heals, but as Duncan’s bruise begins to fade he realizes that in order for him to keep up his charade he’s going to need some help – from a real bully.

Dark Star & Fulltilt: Confessions of a Rock Idol by Creston Mapes

The last two books on this list are a Christian fiction duology about a millionaire rock star named Everett Lester. This series is a little more dark and edgier than you think because it follows Everett’s rise to fame with his metal band, Deathstroke, and how he spirals out of control into a life of drugs, darkness, and addiction. With the help of a young lady who says she’s not a fan, Everett discovers that maybe there’s more to life than riches and fame – maybe there’s a purpose behind his music.
